Apple has done a really good job with the latest iteration of its Bluetooth speakers, the AirPods 2. However, the Cupertino-based technology giant may have gone out of its way to ensure that the devices are simply non-repairable completely. Yes, the original AirPods by Apple weren’t very notorious for their reparability and capability to be serviced out of minute damages, but the AirPods 2 are simply impossible to repair.
In simpler words, the latest Apple AirPods are designed to be disposed of after getting any kind of damage that makes them lose their functionality. This news has been broken by iFixit – one of the world’s most popular company on the internet that deals with the servicing and repairing of electronic devices.
iFixit is widely popular for uploading servicing, maintenance, and repairing tutorials for a very large variety of electronic devices including smartphones, tablets, headphones, displays, laptops, and other such. The company also produces many tools that are commonly required during the servicing or repairing process of different types of devices but are otherwise not easily found.
Whenever a popular new electronic product comes out, iFixit records a detailed teardown and reassembly video of the device and briefs about different components seen in the device, their likeliness to be damaged, and their availability. Many successful electronic devices’ repairers around the world have used iFixit’s knowledge or its special tools, or both to go about bringing dead devices back to life.
As with the original AirPods, iFixit created a teardown of the AirPods 2 too. The team was disappointed with the result they got. The team unanimously declared the Apple AirPods 2 to be “disappointingly disposable” and clearly stated that if anything happens to your Airpods 2, you will have to buy them again. The repairing experts also opened up the wireless charging case that comes with the AirPods2.
The case is capable of providing the same 398 mAh battery capacity that was offered by the previous case. The team noted that the circuit was coated by a different water-repellent than in the original AirPods.
Apple’s AirPods 2 were given a reparability rating of 0 out of 10! Apple is notorious for designing its products such that they are hard to repair but even for that standards, 0 is simply unbelievable. Just for comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Buds received a reparability rating of 6 out of 10 by iFixit. The team said that the product is simply not designed to be pried open at all.
In the case of many Apple products, the company offers maintenance and repair services through its dealerships or Genius Bars. The AirPods 2 is a different story. According to iFixit, the Apple AirPods 2 cannot be fixed even by a professional repairing service provider.
There are barely any electronic products that iFixit has completely given up on as they have on the AirPods2. This raises the question that can Apple service the AirPods 2? And if so, will they be providing that service?
