The concept of foldable phones has hit us with quite a surprise and we are very excited to get our hands on the first iteration of foldable display devices about to be offered by some of the biggest technology giants in the world. Even though there isn’t a single commercial foldable smartphone present in the market, the devices have become all the rage of 2019. The top runners in the industry when talking about foldable phones are Samsung and Huawei. Samsung has teased its Galaxy Fold while Huawei Mate X is its one and only competition right now.
None of the two extremely expensive sets are in the market right now. Samsung has postponed the launch date of their Galaxy Fold indefinitely while Huawei is still going strong and is keen on launching the Huawei Mate X flagship on June 2019.
Since the concept of foldable displays is so new, it comes as no surprise that both of the companies must have experimented quite a lot before finalizing the technical specifications as well as the design. The engineering that needs to go in a mobile device that features 2 to 3 displays is way too much and it is impossible to come up with a perfect design in the first try.
According to the latest leak, Huawei also experimented with a few different designs for their foldable phone before zeroing down on the one that we are currently waiting for eagerly. The leak – posted on Weibo – consists of an image in which a Huawei official is showing a foldable phone prototype to the camera. The foldable smartphone’s displays are arranged like in the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the device has fairly thick bezels on the top and bottom edge.
The device definitely isn’t a Huawei Mate X, but it surely is branded with the same company. Looking at the picture closely, you can easily realize that the image is of a convention where the officials are showing off the device. Well, it is not hard to identify the event. If you have been following the smartphone technology since the start of this year, you will easily be able to notice that the event seems to be the Mobile World Congress which was held in Barcelona in February this year. Why did this image surface from China or why did it take so long to reach us is an intriguing mystery.
Looking closely, you can see that the device is clearly way unpolished and it has not been subjected to any kind of glamorous finishing. More intriguing is the fact that the device has almost a negligible bezel on one side while the other side has a considerably thicker bezel. The Huawei Mate X, on the other hand, has very thin bezels on each side. We think that the engineers chose different sizes for the side bezels to be able to spot the best design choice without manufacturing multiple prototypes. The device apparently folds outwards like the finalized Huawei Mate X.
